There’s a renewed effort in the Illinois Legislature to pass an Automatic Voter Registration bill. Lawmakers passed such a bill last year, but Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed it, saying it lacked safeguards. State Senator Andy Manar says this latest measure should provide that.
Manar’s bill lets visitors to certain state agencies opt out of being automatically registered and delay implementation to July of 2018. A similar bill is pending in the Illinois House. Seven other state have Automatic Voter Registration Laws.
