(Chicago, IL) — The Illinois Senate is tweaking their compromise budget plan, adding a new source of revenue. The bipartisan plan is evolving again. This time, a proposed new tax on businesses is being dropped in favor of expanding the sales tax to include food and drugs, which now aren’t taxed. The sales tax rate overall would be cut from six-and-a-quarter-percent to five-and-three-quarters-percent. Governor Rauner has not been involved in these talks, but he urged lawmakers to keep working to achieve a balanced budget that contains structural reforms. It’s not clear when the Senate plan will be ready for a vote.
