The Illinois State Police handle two crashes on Interstate 70 on Thursday morning in Fayette County. The first crash was at 7:48 am at mile post 64.5, which is about 2 miles east of Vandalia. ISP reports say that a vehicle driven by 60 year old John E. Baumeister of Vandalia was traveling west on Interstate 70. Illinois State Police reports say that Baumeister lost control due to snow on the roadway, struck the concrete bridge wall and then was struck by a second vehicle, driven by 73 year old Norbert L. Soltwedel of Shumway. Baumeister was taken to Fayette County Hospital for treatement of injuries.
The other accident also occurred at 7:48 Thursday morning, but was at mile post 54—which is about 7 miles west of Vandalia. Illinois State Police reports say that a vehicle driven by 69 year old Linda L. Jarvais of Summerville, Pennsylvania was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70, lost control on the snow covered roadway and ran off the roadway to the right. ISP says the vehicle struck a guard rail with its front end and came to rest on the right shoulder. Jarvais was transported to Fayette County Hospital for treatment of injuries.
