State lawmakers approved a massive energy bill that will save two nuclear plants in Illinois. The measure will keep Exelon plants in Clinton and the Quad Cities open for the next 10 years, saving 1500 full time jobs. Ameren customers will see an increase in their monthly bill but rates will be capped, and new investments will be made in renewable energy efficiency. House Minority Leader Jim Durkin supported the bill saying overall it’s good for consumers.
Opponents say consumers shouldn’t be bailing out Exelon and that the bill ignores the coal industry. Governor Bruce Rauner has indicated he will sign it into law.
