The St. Elmo Fire Department responded to a house fire Sunday that resulted in an additional six other departments being called in. Just before noon at 11:58am, a call was received of a house fire at 210 West 5th Street in St. Elmo. St. Elmo Fire Department Chief Doug Engeljohn and a St. Elmo Police Officer were first on the scene which saw the house with heavy smoke and flames coming out of a bathroom and a bedroom window. The house was cleared to make sure there was no one inside and St. Elmo firefighters began their attack on the fire with an additional 2 departments being called in. After fighting the blaze for about an hour and a half, a box alarm was called for four more additional departments. The 7 departments and 49 firefighters responding were on scene till about 4:45pm Sunday afternoon. Chief Engeljohn says the 100-plus year old home is deemed a loss.
