(Springfield, IL) — Lawmakers are working to close a loophole to prevent sex offenders from working as referees in Illinois high school sporting events. The “Belleville News-Democrat” reports State Representative Jerry Costello said on Friday that he was working with fellow representative Dan Beiser to pass legislation. This follows recent news that a registered sex offender had worked baseball and basketball games in the Metro East for at least a year. The IHSA does not require background checks for officiating crews.
