(Springfield, IL) — The Illinois Supreme Court is striking down a law cutting the size of juries in civil case from 12 members to six, saying it violates the intent of the state constitution. The justices voted 5 to zero to overturn the 2014 law which was passed as a way of increasing pay for jurors by dividing the allotted compensation money among fewer people. The Supreme Court found that the writers of the constitution in 1970 intended to guarantee that the right to a jury trial was meant to include larger juries in civil cases.
