(Springfield, IL) — A new law taking effect this school year means school districts must do away with zero-tolerance policies and limit long-term suspensions and expulsions. Instead of a blanket rule for how to deal with certain offenses, administrators must limit suspensions of more than three days to cases in which a student poses a threat to the school and all other disciplinary options have been exhausted. Even before the new law took effect, the number of suspensions had been dropping. In 2015, about two-hundred-96-thousand Illinois students were suspended, compared with about three-hundred-40-thousand the year before.
