The South Central Lady Cougars and the Lady Vandals each went 3-1 in the Vandalia Tournament bringing home hardware in the process.
For South Central, they opened up pool play with a 25-17, 25-14 win over Vandalia, before getting a 25-18, 25-9 win over Lebanon and a 25-9, 25-14 win over East Alton-Wood River to sweep the pool. With a 3-0 record in pool play, South Central earned a spot in the Championship game against Carlyle who swept the other pool. After falling 25-13 in set one to Carlyle, the Cougars battled the Indians point for point throughout the second set coming up just short with a 25-22 second set loss to finish in 2nd place. After the championship match, South Central Coach Mary Brimberry says they just need to work on better adjusting to how the other teams are playing them.
South Central is now 12-3 on the season and will play tonight against Windsor/Stew-Stras.
After falling to South Central in their first match of the day, the Lady Vandals got a 25-18, 25-9 win over East Alton-Wood River and a 25-18, 25-19 win over Lebanon to claim a spot in the 3rd place game. After going 2-1 in Pool B, Hillsboro earned their place in the 3rd place match as well, pitting Vandalia and Hillsboro against each other for the 2nd time in 3 days. The Lady Vandals were able to capitalize on several Hiltopper errors and timely hitting and serving to avenge their loss two days earlier and get a 25-18, 25-14 win to take 3rd place honors. And Lady Vandals Coach Amber Connor said the girls were fired up for their rematch with Hillsboro and used that in the match.
The Lady Vandals are now 6-8 on the season and will be back in action tonight at home against Ramsey.
