(St. Louis, MO) — Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty each clubbed a two-run homer in the third inning as the Cardinals clipped the Brewers, 4-3, in St. Louis. Carlos Martinez gave up two earned runs over seven frames to improve to 14-and-7. Seung Hwan Oh picked up his 17th save for the Cards, who are a half-game back for the final National League wild card spot. Scooter Gennett homered for the Brewers, his 11th of the year. Jimmy Nelson gave up all four runs to take the loss for Milwaukee.
(Houston, TX) — John Lester struck out seven over seven shutout innings as the Cubs blanked the Astros, 2-0, in Houston. Lester improved to 16-and-4 on the year, and Aroldis Chapman picked up his 13th save in a Cubs jersey. Kris Bryant provided the offense with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Cubs improved to an MLB-best 90-and-50. Houston’s Joe Musgrove gave up the homer to take the loss. The Astros are on a three-game skid.
