A new law signed by Governor Bruce Rauner aims to improve the reporting and prosecution process for sexual assault victims. The measure lets the state hire forensic analysts more quickly and victims will be able to request information about the status of their rape kit testing. Attorney General Lisa Madigan is a big supporter of the new law, which also requires more training for Police, EMT’s, and 911 operators in dealing with sexual assault victims.
The law also drastically increases the amount of time a survivor can consent to have their rape kit tested.
