(Chicago, IL) — A group is claiming in a lawsuit that a bill signed by Governor Bruce Rauner last week providing that pregnant patients are informed of the option to possibly have an abortion is unconstitutional. The lawsuit, filed on Friday, focuses on the Illinois Health Care Right of Conscience Act, which requires doctors who can’t or won’t perform an abortion or sterilization procedure to refer a patient to another doctor. The plaintiffs in the suit are a doctor from Downers Grove, a pregnancy center in Rockford and Aid for Women, a Chicago not-for-profit. They’re being represented by the group Alliance Defending Freedom, which has defended groups in the past from state laws it feels impinge on religious freedoms.
