(Springfield, IL) — Illinois is receiving a windfall of cash in the form of late fees. The Secretary of State’s Office suspended mailing license plate renewal notices to car-owners last fall in order to save money during the budget crisis. The move led to more drivers renewing their plates after the deadline. This caused the state to receive nearly ten-million-dollars in late fees this year, which is more than double the amount collected during the same period in 2015.
