After spending the last several months at the Chester Mental Health Center, a 25-year old Chicago man who escaped from the Vandalia Correctional Center in September 2014 has reportedly been found fit to resume court proceeding per a Department of Human Services report. Late last week, a report filed by the DHS concerning Marcus Battice stated he is now fit to stand trial and a fitness hearing has been set for July 29 at 1p.m. in Fayette County Court. Battice is charged with one count of escape by a felon from a penal institution, a Class 2 felony. Battice had just about four months remaining at VCC on his original 4-year sentence for unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle at the time of his escape. Battice was found on a frontage road just north of Interstate 70 about 18 hours after escaping and was transferred to Pontiac Correctional Center until being sent to Chester.
