(St. Louis, MO) — Johnny Cueto tossed six innings of one-run ball to lead the Giants past the Cardinals, 5-1, at Busch Stadium. Brandon Crawford put San Francisco on top in the fourth with an RBI-single, while Denard Span knocked home two-runs in the final frame to help put the game away. The Giants improved to 35-and-22. St. Louis opened the scoring in the third with a run-scoring single from Stephen Piscotty. Adam Wainwright allowed two runs in seven innings to take the tough luck loss.
(Chicago, IL) — John Lackey combined with three relievers on a six-hitter as the Cubs shut out the Diamondbacks 6-0 at Wrigley Field. Lackey allowed five hits while walking two and striking out nine over six-and-two-thirds innings to move to 6-and-2. Anthony Rizzo broke up a scoreless game with an RBI double in the sixth and Chicago tacked on five more in the eighth to take the opener of the three-game series. Addison Russell and Javier Baez each had two-run doubles in the frame. Archie Bradley struck out 10 over six innings of one-run ball for Arizona, but fell to 2-and-1 with the tough-luck loss.
