(Champaign, IL) — At a time when the state budget crisis is forcing Illinois’ public universities to cut staff and programs, fewer students appear to be considering Illinois schools. The “State Journal-Register” reports that there’s been a decline in the number of applications to at least four of the state’s 12 public universities, while schools in neighboring states say more students from Illinois are applying to them. The Illinois schools seeing applications drop are all smaller schools that are feeling the budget pinch most intensely. Conversely though, three of the state’s larger schools, less affected by the budget impasse, have seen an increase in applicants.
