A 24-year old man from Burbank, IL is facing charges of unlawful transportation of cigarettes following his arrest by the Illinois State Police in Fayette County on May 4. At approximately 11:40pm on Wednesday, May 4, Mohamad Ibrahim was arrested on Interstate 70 at MM 76. Ibrahim is charged with Unlawful Transportation of Unstamped Cigarettes as the information against him states Ibrahim “transported into or within the State of Illinois original packages of cigarettes containing a total of more than 40,000 cigarettes not properly tax stamped for said transport within the State of Illinois, and said defendant did not have a permit from the Illinois Department of Revenue for the transportation of cigarettes without Illinois tax stamps.” The second count against Ibrahim is Unlawful Transportation of Unstamped Cigarettes, as he “knowingly possessed more than 1,000 packages of contraband cigarettes within the State of Illinois.” Both counts are Class 3 Felony charges. The case is being handled by the Illinois Attorney General’s office as the offense is a violation of the Illinois Department of Revenue’s Cigarette Use Tax Act. Ibrahim will appear in Fayette County Court for a preliminary hearing on May 20 at 1pm.
