(Urbana, IL) — Veterinarians at the University of Illinois say surgery on a bald eagle that suffered a gunshot may enable it to return to the skies. The young eagle was found in southern Illinois with a broken bone in her wing after being shot several months ago. Surgery is planned today at the University of Illinois Veteran Teaching Hospital and the “News-Gazette” reports that if it’s successful, the eagle may regain the ability to fly. It’s not known who shot the federally protected bird or why.
