(Springfield, IL) — An Illinois Senate committee today approved a bill that would stop the state from continuing to sue prison inmates to recover the costs of their incarceration. Designed as a revenue-generator, the practice has been shown to increase the difficulties former inmates have trying to re-enter society. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, whose office was charged with suing the inmates, objected to the practice, saying it raises moral questions.
