(Springfield, IL) — Since the Secretary of State stopped sending out reminders to vehicle owners that their license plate renewals are coming up, the state has seen a million-dollar windfall in late fees. As of last week, the office recorded one-point-two-million-dollars more in fines this year compared with the same period last year. A bill filed this year would suspend the 20-dollar late fee until the state ends the budget deadlock that the Secretary of State cited as the reason it stopped sending the reminders.
