(Springfield, IL) — A Republican state lawmaker has withdrawn a bill that would have denied financial aid to an unmarried mother who refuses to name the father of the child. John Cavaletto’s bill also required that if the mother refused to name the father, his identity would be determined through a DNA test so that he or his family could be forced to support the child. If that didn’t happen, the now-dropped bill would have denied a birth certificate for the child and financial aid for its mother. Cavaletto moved today to suspend consideration of his bill and co-sponsor Keith Wheeler dropped out as co-sponsor.
