(Chicago, IL) — Jewel-Osco stores are taking one brand of grated parmesan cheese from their shelves over concerns that it contains high levels of a wood-based additive. Essential Everyday Parmesan Cheese is being pulled from shelves in all one-hundred-85 Jewel-Osco stores after an FDA investigation found that it contained eight-point-eight-percent cellulose, an anti-clumping agent made from wood. That level of cellulose is two to four times what the FDA considers acceptable. High levels of cellulose were also found in Wal-Mart’s Great Value Brand, Kraft, and Whole Foods 365 brand grated parmesan.
