Donald D. Hartzel, 85, of Vandalia formerly of Granite City passed away at 6:35am, Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Fayette County Hospital, Vandalia.
Services for Mr. Hartzel will be held at 10:00am, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia with Rev. Carl Rhodes officiating, visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will follow at 3:00pm, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL. Memorials may be made to the National Down Syndrome Society or Wounded Warrior Project. Donald was born July 14, 1930 in Pomona, IL, the son of William and Anna (McQuinney) Hartzel. He married his first wife Dorothy and together they had two children, they later separated and he married Janet Powell in December of 1981; she preceded him in death. Donald was a US Air Force Veteran serving from 1951-1955 during the Korean War and was a janitor for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville before retiring.
He is survived by his son James Hartzel and wife Debra of Waller, TX; daughter Kathy and husband Denny Randall of Vandalia, IL; grandchildren Kristen Randall and fiancé Josh Owens, Scott Randall and fiancé BriAnne Links, Aaron Hartzel and wife Deanna, Joshua Hartzel and wife Stephanie, and Timothy Hartzel and wife Kayla; great grandchildren Kamdyn Owens, Autumn Randall, Katelyn Hartzel, Caleb Hartzel, and Noah Hartzel; first wife and mother of James and Kathy, Darlene Sullivan of Vandalia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janet, brothers William, George, and Bob Hartzel and sister Dorothy Timmons.
