(Hillsboro, IL) — A stubborn underground fire that’s been burning for nearly a year could mean a permanent end to the Deer Run coal mine near Hillsboro. Efforts to extinguish the fire that broke out last March have failed and now the built-up carbon monoxide makes the mine unsafe for operation. Foresight Energy of St. Louis has shut the mine down indefinitely, putting an estimated 160 employees out of work. A statement from the company says it’s uncertain when or if the mine will reopen.
