(Springfield, IL) — A state law taking effect with the new year will mean more public playground equipment designed to accommodate children with disabilities. The bill directs the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to prioritize grants intended to purchase things like accessible swings, wheelchair-accessible tables and ramps to playground equipment. Senate sponsor Andy Manar of Bunker Hill credits a question from fifth-grader Maddie Heflin with sparking his interest in the notion of making playgrounds more inclusive for disabled kids.
