One person was injured and was transported from the scene by helicopter following an accident on Interstate 70 Friday night. The accident occurred at milepost 56–about 5 miles west of the Vandalia exit. Illinois State Police says a Tractor Trailer driven by 48 year old Lamptey Welbeck of Indianapolis, Indiana was traveling east on I-70 when he drove off the roadway onto the north shoulder and into the median. The unit, while in skid, came back onto I-70 eastbound and overturned before skidding into the south guardrail face of I-70 east. The eastbound lanes were closed for about two hours. Welbeck was transported from the scene by helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Welbeck was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident.
