(Springfield, IL) — Senior citizen lobbyist group AARP is mobilizing its members to oppose any plans to extend the state income tax to retirement payments. While there’s been no formal proposal, the idea of taxing retirement income has been floated by some lawmakers as the state casts about for new sources of revenue to fill a growing budget hole. AARP’s Illinois Director Bob Gallo says taxing pension payments would be unfair to people living on fixed incomes who already face the rising costs of medicine and other necessities.
