(Springfield, IL) — The Rauner Administration and the state budget impasse have thrown up a roadblock to a plan to upgrade the state police vehicle fleet. Fifty-eight-million-dollars raised from a vehicle registration surcharge has worked since 2008 to provide money to replace aging cruisers, but the latest round of purchases has been stalled by Governor Rauner’s order banning new vehicle purchases, even from specially earmarked funds. Several hundred vehicles are old enough to warrant replacement, though that’s only about a third of the state police fleet.
