(Springfield, IL) — Governor Rauner is trying to fight efforts to restore child care assistance to thousands of poor working families who were cut off because of a change in the eligibility rules. Lawmakers are pushing a bill to provide 220-million-dollars to the program and to undo Rauner’s changes that cut off aid to about 90-percent of those families who had previously qualified. Rauner issued a letter to lawmakers warning that the move would increase the budget deficit and would violate his authority as governor. The Senate has passed the measure and a House vote could come next week.
