(Chicago, IL) — Time’s up for convicted former state representative Derrick Smith — he must report to prison Friday to begin his sentence for bribery. A federal judge has denied Smith’s latest effort to stay out of prison while his appeal plays out, telling Smith his five-month sentence would be over by now if he hadn’t sought to delay it. The Chicago west-sider was convicted of taking a seven-thousand-dollar bribe to support a day care operator’s effort to get a state license, but the person he was conspiring with was a government informant.
