Jack Summers, 74, of Vandalia, passed away on October 20, 2015 at Fayette County Hospital ER.
Services for Mr. Summers will be held at 10:00am, Friday, October 23, 2015 at Unity Baptist Church Hwy 185 Location, visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00pm, Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Unity Baptist Church Hwy 185 Location and also one hour prior to services at the church Friday. Burial will follow services in Pilcher Cemetery, rural Brownstown. Memorial may be made to Vandalia Swimming Pool. Arrangements by Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia.
Jackson Mearl “Jack” Summers was born October 12, 1941 in Vandalia, the son of James Henry Francis “Frank” Summers and Velma Pearl (Jay) Summers. He married Carol “Jeanne” (Williams) Summers on August 19, 1961. As a kid Jack delivered newspapers and bucked hay, in his teens he worked at the Johnson Stephens Shinkle Shoe Factory, he was the owner/operator of Russels Marathon Gas Station in downtown Vandalia prior to working as a Correctional Officer for the State of Illinois. After retirement he helped with his son Jack’s Environmental Business planting over ¾ million trees, removing tree stumps hauling water and doing snow removal.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne Summers of Vandalia; son Jack Summers and wife Julie of Vandalia and Omaha, NE; daughter Tammy Summers-Moreland and husband Rusty Moreland of Ramsey; brothers Jim Summers and wife Linda, Danny Scholes, David Summers, and Leonard Scholes; sisters Jesse Maxine and husband Bob Crager, Janet Alsbury, Cora Scholes, Priscella Heiser and husband Max and Gloria Sprague and husband Carl; grandsons Ryan Summers, Kenneth O’Shea, Andrew Potter, Lucas Potter, and Ben Potter; great grandchildren Aiden and Anna O’Shea; many nieces and nephews; and the family pet “Mickey”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jerry Summers and sister Wilma Summers, and two infant siblings.
