(Chicago, IL) — The state has told more than a hundred jails, health departments and family planning programs that it’s ending free STD testing at state labs. The Illinois Department of Health denies that the change is tied to the budget impasse, but says requiring the use of local hospitals or private labs for STD tests will save the state money. Local health departments say the move puts them in a bind since the state has not only stopped testing, but is also not providing funds to have the tests done elsewhere.
