(Springfield, IL) — The director of the Illinois State Fair is quitting in protest of the way the Rauner Administration handled the dismissal of his boss, state agriculture director Phil Nelson. Patrick Buchen, a lifelong Illinois farmer, is stepping down after four months on the job and just six months after Nelson was appointed by Governor Rauner. Buchen says Nelson was forced out and says the way it was handled was “very unprofessional.” Attendance at this year’s fair was over 400-thousand, less than half of last year’s numbers.
