The man accused of escaping from the Vandalia Correctional Center for about 16 hours last September made an appearance in Fayette County Court on Monday. 22-year old Marcus Battice appeared for a hearing in court Monday in which it was reported that Dr. Fred Klug has performed the fitness evaluation on Battice and additional hospital records have been submitted for review. A fitness hearing has now been set for November 2 at 1p.m. Pre-trial in the matter was set to take place on Monday, but was instead continued until October 20 at 10a.m. Battice is charged with one count of escape from a penal institution by a felon after his alleged escape the afternoon of September 23, 2014. Battice was captured just about 3 ½ miles from the prison after being on the run for just under 16 hours. Battice was just four months from his parole date at the time of the alleged escape.
