(Springfield, IL) — Plant scientists at Purdue University have confirmed that a new disease has hit corn in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Agriculture says the disease called “tar spot” has shown up in Bureau, DeKalb and LaSalle counties. The disease has also been found in Indiana, the first-ever cases in the U.S. of the disease previously found in Mexico, Central America and South America. Little impact on this year’s corn crop is expected.
