Matt Carpenter hit a solo shot among his three hits for the NL Central-leading Redbirds, who have won three in-a-row to move four games ahead of Pittsburgh in the division. Jaime Garcia improved to 9-and-5 after giving up four runs in six-and-a-third innings. Trevor Rosenthal closed it out for his 45th save.

Kris Bryant doubled in a run in the sixth and then scored on Starlin Castro’s sacrifice later in the frame. Hector Rondon picked up the win for the Northsiders, who have won two in-a-row since dropping the opener of the four-game set. Chicago is three games behind Pittsburgh for the top NL Wild Card spot. The teams wrap up the four-game series today.
