A 74 year old man from Greenville was taken via ARCH Helicopter to a St. Louis area hospital Friday afternoon. WGEL Radio in Greenville reports the still-unidentified man was burning trash on property he owns on Rt. 140 near the Bond/Madison County Line. He was sitting in his van 15 to 20 yards from the fire, but the flames quickly spread to nearby weeds and grass, which was about 6 feet tall. According to Alhambra Fire Chief Allan Daiber, the man exited his van and was able to call 911 before being overcome by smoke and heat. He was found on the ground in the field The van was a total loss. The fire did not spread to the structure on the property. In addition to Alhambra firefighters, Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies responded. Crews were on the scene for about two hours.
