(Springfield, IL) — The battle over the Illinois budget is putting some five-billion-dollars in federal funds in jeopardy, at least temporarily. Lawmakers are considering bills to authorize the acceptance and spending of the federal funds as they do each year, but Governor Rauner is threatening to veto them. He objects to the inclusion of state money in those spending measures, saying that would contribute to the unbalanced budget plans Democrats have proposed. Democrats noted some state spending is necessary as matching funds to qualify for federal dollars.
