The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of marriage leaves a number of unanswered questions and concerns about how the ruling ultimately impacts churches, church groups, and individual church members. State Senator Kyle McCarter says the ruling earlier this summer opens the door for lawsuits that attempts to force changes to private religious beliefs that oppose the public civil judgment.
Senator McCarter is filing legislation to protect both institutions and individuals from the high court ruling. Senator McCarter says the Religion Freedom Defense Act would ensure protections for Illinois citizens right to the free exercise of their religion.
