(Springfield, IL) — The number of people in Illinois prisons is going down, and one big reason is changes in drug sentencing. The Department of Corrections last year processed fewer than 20-thousand inmates, down from more than 27-thousand in 2009. Diversion programs and other alternatives for sentencing drug offenders have reduced the incoming population, while early releases for non-violent offenders have cut the existing number of inmates.
