(Chicago, IL) — A federal appellate court has overturned five of the 18 corruption counts on which former Governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted, setting the stage at least for a new sentencing hearing. Other counts remain intact, so Blagojevich remains in prison for now. Prosecutors have the option of trying Blagojevich again on the five counts that were overturned or they could drop those counts and proceed to a new sentencing hearing on the remaining counts. The court’s order directs the trial judge to reconsider if the 14-year sentence is an appropriate one for the remaining counts.
