(Freeburg, IL) — The effort to stop Freeburg Community High School from continuing to use the nickname Midgets for its sports teams has come up short. About five-hundred people came to last night’s school board meeting to ask that the board drop the name that’s been associated with sports teams for about a hundred years. It’s unclear how the name came to be adopted. The Little People of America, a group representing those with dwarfism, had petitioned Freeburg and six other schools around the country to drop the name because of its offensive connotations. Freeburg’s school superintendent said no harm is intended by the name and said the decision should remain with those who run the school.
