(Mount Vernon, IL) — An Illinois appellate court is siding with a Madison County judge who rejected the legal challenge of an environmental group to the practice of “fracking”. The group Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing Our Environment sought a preliminary junction to prevent the Illinois Department of Natural Resources from implementing rules on fracking, a controversial high-volume oil and gas drilling technique. On Friday, the 5th District Appellate Court issued an opinion that backs up the previous ruling supporting the state from last November. While oil and gas industry officials have claimed fracking is safe, opponents believe it can cause pollution and health problems.
