State officials are looking to the courts to determine what can and can’t be paid during the budget impasse in Springfield. Attorney General Lisa Madigan is asking the Cook County Circuit to clarify if the state can continue to make certain payments, even though there is no new budget in place. Comptroller Leslie Munger welcomes the guidance.
Munger specifically wants to make sure state employees can be paid on time. For now, she says they do know they can fund some things like old bills due to state vendors, retiree benefits, local government payments and some assistance programs.
