(Martinsville, IL) — A lesson in free speech that included stepping on the U.S. flag is turning into a lesson in labor law for a teacher in Martinsville, east of Champaign. Jordan Parmenter was making a point about free speech to his high school English class in May, when he stepped on a small flag after a student said he was being disrespectful. The incident led the Martinsville school board to vote to fire Parmenter, who says he plans to fight the dismissal through the teachers union.
