(Springfield, IL) — Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is urging lawmakers to pass tougher gun regulations following a mass shooting at a South Carolina church. During a news conference on Sunday, Durbin said guns need to be kept out of the hands of convicted felons and the mentally unstable. He says he supports background checks that are more extensive and stiffer penalties for certain straw purchases. Twenty-one-year-old Dylann Roof allegedly shot nine people to death inside an historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina last week, and Durbin said the crime might have been prevented had there been more effective gun laws.
