(Phoenix, AZ) — Depending on where you live it may have already been feeling like summer for awhile now, but the calendar is correct — today is the first day of summer. We welcome the official start of summer, the solstice as it’s called, at 12:38 p.m. Maybe that seems like a random time, but what it is, is the exact time that the sun reaches its highest point in the sky.
The first day of summer is also the longest day of the year. The sun will be up from just before 5:30 in the morning until just after 8:30 this evening. The exception is in some parts of Alaska, Canada, Finland and Sweden, where the sun will shine all day long today. For Fayette County, sunrise today is 5:31 am and sunset is 8:25 pm.
