With very heavy rains expected to be on the way, the City of Vandalia is dealing with a water issue of just trying to keep the water flowing in the city. Water Department head Marty Husky told the Vandalia City Council at last night’s meeting they are dealing with a water leak from their intake at Vandalia Lake. And, the city brought in engineer Rodney Potts to help them figure out the issue. Husky says, at this time, they have a portable pump set up at the Kaskaskia River with a floating intake to grab water and they will be bringing in an electric pump today. Husky says they are concerned about the heavy rain, with as much as 5 inches expected, as it could cause problems for the intake situation. Husky says they were expecting to lose the normal river intake last night because of the rising water levels on the river. Mayor Rick Gottman said he asked Potts to contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and ask them to back off the amount of water they are release from Lake Shelbyville, if possible, to allow them more time to figure out this issue. Husky says they are beginning to pinpoint the area of the leak from the lake and Husky says he thinks it’s connected with the Interstate bridge project possibly. Husky says they are in no danger of a shortage of water for the city right now, as he says the water towers are “crammed full.”
