(Bloomington, IL) — In a series of rallies across Illinois, members of the state’s largest employee union demanded a fair contract as the current pact has about three weeks left. Hundreds of AFSCME members gathered in Chicago, while smaller groups came out in Bloomington, Champaign, Rock Island and nine other cities to make the point that without a contract or a budget agreement, a government shutdown is a real possibility. The union says that would mean the suspension of services for the state’s neediest populations — children, the elderly and the sick.
