Governor Bruce Rauner is signing a new law to help keep guns out of the hands of those threatening violence. The so-called “Red Flag” law gives family members or police worried that a loved one may hurt themselves or other a place to express their concerns. They can petition the court to have that person’s guns taken away for 6 months, which State Police Director Leo Schmitz fully supports.
Schmitz says the law also protects the rights of the individual in question, giving them a chance to appeal during the 6 month period.
